Applying for Primary Schools
The application window for primary schools in England opens in September and closes on 15 January of the year before your child starts school. So, if your child is due to start school in September 2024, you will need to apply between September 2023 and January 2024.
It is important to apply early, as places at popular schools are often limited. You can apply for up to 5 schools, and your local council will consider a range of factors when deciding which school to offer your child a place at, including your child’s home address, siblings’ attendance at the school, and any special educational needs your child may have.
You can apply for a primary school place online or by using your council’s application form. You apply through your local council even if you’re applying for schools in another council area.
Once you have applied, you will be sent an offer letter in April. If you are not offered a place at your preferred school, you can appeal the decision.
Here are some additional tips for applying for primary schools in England:
- Start planning early. The application process can be quite complicated, so it is important to start planning early.
- Visit schools. Once you have shortlisted some schools, visit them to see if they are a good fit for your child.
- Talk to other parents. Talk to other parents who have children at the schools you are interested in. They can give you valuable insights into the schools.
- Get advice from your local council. Your local council can provide you with advice on the application process and the schools in your area.
here is a checklist of things to consider when choosing a primary school:
- Atmosphere and ethos: Does the school feel friendly and welcoming? Are children valued and cared for? What is the behavior like at the school?
- Academic standards: How do children do academically at the school? Does the school have high expectations for all children? Do all children make good progress?
- A rich curriculum: Does the school offer a wide range of subjects and activities? Does the school have a strong focus on the arts, music, and sports?
- Teachers: Are the teachers qualified and experienced? Do they seem passionate about teaching?
- Parental involvement: Is the school open to parental involvement? Are there opportunities for parents to volunteer or get involved in the school community?
- Location: Is the school conveniently located for you and your child? Is there safe and reliable transportation to and from school?
- Cost: What are the tuition fees, if any? Are there any other costs associated with attending the school?
- Special needs: If your child has special needs, does the school have the resources and support to meet their needs?
Once you have considered these factors, you can start to narrow down your choices and visit schools that you are interested in. It is important to visit the school in person and talk to the headteacher, teachers, and parents to get a feel for the school and whether it is a good fit for your child.
